As of July 1, 2026, eligible Medicare Part D members can get Wegovy, Zepbound (KwikPen), or Foundayo for a flat $50 monthly copay under the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. Most patients (and many chain pharmacy counters) do not know about it yet. Here is how it works and how our Detroit pharmacists can help.
Starting July 1, 2026, Medicare is covering GLP-1 weight loss medications for the first time through a temporary federal program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. If you or a family member is on Medicare and has been told these medications are not covered, that answer just changed - and many pharmacy counters have not caught up yet.
What the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge covers
The program provides eligible Medicare Part D members access to specific GLP-1 medications approved for weight loss at a flat $50 copay for each 30-day supply. The covered medications are Wegovy (both injection and tablet forms), Zepbound (KwikPen form only - single-dose vials and pens are not covered), and Foundayo. The program runs from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027.
Who qualifies
You must be enrolled in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage. Eligibility is based on body mass index (BMI) and health status: generally a BMI of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 30 to 34.9 along with a qualifying condition such as uncontrolled high blood pressure or certain forms of heart failure. Your doctor must submit a prior authorization request through the CMS central processor before the prescription can be filled under the program.
Important fine print
The $50 copay is the same in every Part D phase, but because the Bridge operates outside of the normal Part D benefit, the copay does not count toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket maximum, and Extra Help (the Low-Income Subsidy) does not reduce it. If you already receive a GLP-1 through your Part D plan for a covered condition like type 2 diabetes, you are not eligible for the Bridge - you simply continue your existing coverage.
